Dina Oyun, manager of the "Shu-de" group: "Voices from the Distant Steppe recorded by Shu-de at the Realworld studio under Peter's Gabriel's personal patronage July, 1992, after a chain of lucky coincidences of the adventurous first journey of Tuvan throat-singeres abroad, can now be considered a rarity due to different reasons. First and foremost as it represents most fully the unique vocal technique of Oleg Kuular, the best Tuvan Khoomei-singer of all the times!!! The great Khoomei-performer is no more alive...
Kuular (translated into English as Swan) was born in Bazhyn-Aalak, one of the 'most-singing' villages in Tuva which gave birth to a number of other famous Tuvan throat-singers, including Kaigal-ool Khovalyg. Oleg Kuular and Gennady Chash (also dead) were the first to get recognition abroad. Kuular in the late 80-ties successfully toured in America. His virtuoso throat-singing techniques range far from the commonly recognised 5 styles offering a diversity of 8-10 different styles which scholars could not think of the names for.
Interesting is the fact that during that memorious tour to Britain when the recordinf was made the two Tuvan groups - Shu-de and Huun-Huur-tu - have accidentally come to compete with each other at the Annual Eisteddfod Folk Festival (Wales). None was among the prize-winners in the 'Choir Competition', but in the soloist nomination Oleg Kuular overwhelmingly beat Kaigal-ool Khovalyg and received a jury approval.
The folk-songs recorded on this first Shu-de CD were delicately arranged by Alexei Shoigu, one of the most promising composers of Tuva, artistic director of the group. He is no more alive either.
The second 'Shu-de' Album recorded in Italy, 1995 without Alexei was much less sucessful. Later on after the death of Oleg Kuular (he committed suicide) the group has come to an end.
